Brian Le Lievre

July 17, 1927 — January 2, 2026

With sadness, the family of Brian LeLievre announce his passing on January 2, 2026 surrounded by his family at the Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario.

Brian was the cherished husband of the late Marie LeLievre, beloved Dad to daughter Christine LeLievre, sons Stephen LeLievre (predeceased 1996) and Phil LeLievre (Deb). Proud Grandfather to Kate Bakelaar (Alex), Meghan McLeod (Stephen) and Evan LeLievre. He is also remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is now reunited with his son Stephen, sister Verna and parents Edna and Sydney.

Brian was born in Wagin, Western Australia on July 17th, 1927. From an early age, Brian loved mathematics, physics and problem solving which led him to receiving his Civil Engineering degree from the University of Western Australia. His career began in Tasmania, leading several infrastructure projects. News of large hydroelectric projects in North America lured Brian west and included a fortuitous stop in London England where he met the love of his life Marie, who was heading home on the same trans-Atlantic ship to Canada. Brian and Marie connected immediately over their love of travel and the world. Shortly after arriving in Canada, they were married and began their 70-year love story.

Brian’s desire for further education led him to pursue his PhD in Civil Engineering and a distinguished career as a professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Brian was a well-loved professor who shared his passion for engineering with real life experiences and supportive mentoring for over 25 years. He was awarded the title Professor Emeritus recognizing his significant contribution to the lives of students and the University.

Following retirement, Brian and Marie built their dream home on Salt Spring Island, BC where they lived for many years. They welcomed friends and family to this wonderful part of the world and were involved in many community projects. In 2007 they moved back to Ontario to be closer to family. Brian’s passion for learning continued with a strong interest in computers, genealogy, reading, tennis and travelling but most importantly, his family. Brian loved spending time with his family sharing stories, laughter and love, often with a glass of fine wine.

Brian was a true gentleman who led with kindness and a wonderful sense of humour. While we grieve his passing, we take comfort knowing he lived a wonderful life and that he’ll live on through his family, students and in those who were lucky enough to have known him.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Cama Woodlands, LTC where Brian lived in his final years. A family gathering will take place at a later date.

Donations in memory of Brian are gratefully accepted to the University of Waterloo Brian and Marie Scholarship Fund and Cama Woodlands LTC.
