With great sadness we announce the passing of Dr. George C. Holywell of Hamilton, Ontario. He died peacefully at Emmanuel House on January 22nd, 2025 after bravely battling cancer. He was 80 years old.
Dr. Holywell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and was predeceased by his mother, Isabella Holywell, father, George C. Holywell, and sister Jeannette Haldane. George was a devoted husband to Veronica for 54 years and loving father to Rachel Sheahan (Peter) and Andrew Holywell (Sarah). He will be deeply missed by his grandsons Quinn, James, and Ewan.
Dr. Holywell was a titan of the Canadian aluminum industry, spending over 30 years at Alcan directing the technical aspects of aluminum production. He began his career in Lynemouth, UK before moving to Kitimat, BC. His next post was at Alcan’s Kingston Laboratory and finally at Alcan’s head office in Montreal. Dr. Holywell was the recipient of three U.S patents, for potlining and magnesium production. He retired from Alcan in 2003 and began acting as a technical consultant in the complex field of reinsurance for industrial claims. In addition to this work in his retirement, he also found time to publish in technical journals and textbooks in the field of metallurgy.
George will be remembered for his love of learning, his unpredictable golf game, creative gardening, and stories told over a pint of beer and a glass of whisky. He travelled extensively throughout his life and into retirement. George and Veronica enjoyed trips together to Australia, Russia, Africa and Portugal before settling in Scottsdale, Arizona. There like so many Canadians, they became “snowbirds” and enjoyed the warm winter sun and the unique backdrop of the desert for golfing and entertaining. George and Veronica lived a beautiful and exciting life full of adventures and memories.
Per his request, George’s ashes will be scattered on Edinburgh landmark, Arthur’s Seat, and at his favourite hole #8 at the Braid Hills Golf course. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the George Heriot’s school Foundation400 campaign is appreciated https://www.george-heriots.com/being-a-herioter/foundation400/. This foundation offers financial support packages to children who have been bereaved of a parent. This school and program were near and dear to George’s heart.
